Chapter 11

“Mum, where on earth are you taking us?” Zoe asked. “We are way up in Kloof Street, there isn’t much else ahead.”

Their mother just smiled. Caitlin put her head back and stared at the traffic. It was the first week of December and it seemed as if the number of cars moving into Cape Town on this late Sunday morning had doubled since she’d been here a few weeks before. It was nearly Christmas and most people were probably on their way to the Waterfront for shopping.

She’d struggled to get into the holiday spirit this year. Holidaymakers had been flooding into Hermanus over the weekend and the little town was nearly bursting at the seams. This had always been her favorite time of year but this year she felt so...unhappy. It was probably the closest word to describe the lethargic feeling that had crept up on her.

Don hadn’t contacted her since their last telephone conversation. She kept telling herself that she hadn’t expected him to, but every time the phone rang or there was a knock on her door, her heart skipped a beat. Because it might be him.

It made her so mad. She didn’t want to be that girl who sat at home staring at the moon, longing for her man. But that was exactly what she’d been doing the last couple of months. Lovesick. The word crept into her head and she sat up straight.

She was not lovesick. To be lovesick, she would have to be in love. Oh, hell. Nobody was in love! What a crazy thought.

“I’m going to feed Caitlin,” their mother said and gave her a sideways look. “You’ve lost such a lot of weight and you’ve been moping since we returned from the Seychelles in October.”

“I’ve been busy, Mum, not moping, there’s a difference,” Caitlin said and looked up at Table Mountain. The sight always took her breath away. It was always there, always looking the same.

“I know you can’t cook, but you love to eat. Or, you used to love to eat. Today, I’m going to make sure you enjoy a good meal and I’m going to see to it that you laugh a little. Dana is with us and we’ve picked up Zoe and Hannah. I haven’t seen my girls for quite some time and from what I’ve heard, both your sisters will be away from tomorrow until Christmas. So, there’s no more reason to mope.”

Caitlin ignored her mother’s probing look and turned around to look at her sisters. “I know Hannah is off to Paris, but where are you going?” she asked Zoe.

Zoe shrugged. “One of the Cavallo brothers contacted me, it seems—”

“Which one?” Hannah and Caitlin asked simultaneously.

“Dale, I think he said.”

“Why?” Hannah wanted to know.

“They need an interior decorator for a new hotel they’re building near the Kruger National Park. And apparently one of the other brothers mentioned what I do.” She frowned. “I would like the job, but I didn’t much like the way he talked to me, so I’ll have to see.
